The invention and use of the atomic bomb in August 1945 marked a decisive turning point in modern history, inaugurating the Atomic Age. Artists responded in diverse ways, ranging from aesthetic fascination with new scientific realities to critical reflections on spectacle, violence, and human tragedy.
Major artists of the second half of the 20th century explored the destructive atom as both historical fact and symbolic force, while the mushroom cloud became an enduring global image of conflict and power. Through popular culture, these representations reflected imperialism, technoscience, and the rise of global capitalism, alongside parallel nuclear propaganda in the communist bloc. In Japan, artistic responses evolved from realism and surrealism to radical Anti-Art movements questioning colonialism and renewed militarism.
